State-of-the-art Baloney Detection

Sometimes, fake news and the ideologies of pseudoscience are so compelling we lose track of reality. In a world where the lines between fact and fiction have become increasingly blurred, how do we distinguish the fake from the truth? Science, with all its flaws, is committed to developing tools that help practitioners discard “bad” ideas and celebrate “good” ones. The best tool to date is called the scientific method; our “candle in the dark”.

At its core, it is an elegant process that champions skepticism, critical thinking, and empirical evidence, challenging us to question our assumptions and put them to the test through rigorous experimentation. It begins with an observation, which in turn sparks a question. Then, we formulate a hypothesis, a tentative explanation, which we must either prove or disprove through systematic experimentation and analysis of data. Only then, after our results have been scrutinized, replicated, and corroborated by our peers, may we draw conclusions and expand the frontiers of human knowledge.
